Setting a target for achieving a net gain for biodiversity may seem straightforward, but having a detailed understanding for what this actually means and how to measure and implement actions that realise that gain can be incredibly complex. 2rog is working with one of Australian’s largest property developers to understand what a net biodiversity gain might look like in the outer fringes of our cities where housing is a necessity and yet bushland often remains. This includes work to develop a clear definition of biodiversity that considers both ecologically and socially important species; planning clear on-ground strategies to minimise impacts and compensate for those that are unavoidable; and setting clear standards for best practise offsetting. We are also developing a suite of tools to measures and report on biodiversity outcomes, both at the site and portfolio level.
