Trent has always worked at the interface of environmental science and agriculture. With around 50% of Australia used for agriculture, and many farmers seeing themselves as stewards of the land for future generations, he was drawn to work that helped people achieve positive environmental outcomes while continuing to work productively on the land. Throughout his career he has worked across carbon farming, biosecurity, and agricultural and environmental research and policy.

What drew Trent to 2rog was a simple combination of good people doing good work. He saw a small company willing to tackle big problems, with a wide variety of projects that aligned with his skills, experience and the areas he wanted to work in. The company’s four values also resonated strongly with him, particularly because they are reflected in the way the team approaches its work.

For Trent, education and understanding are key to creating change. He believes that when someone helps a group understand an issue and make a change, the impact can extend far beyond that initial conversation. Throughout his career, he has sought out opportunities to engage with people, build understanding and share knowledge.

He also believes that Australia needs to continue to grow and develop, but in a way that minimises environmental impacts and draws on both scientific understanding and the enduring value of cultural knowledge. For Trent, bringing these perspectives together is an important part of achieving good outcomes.

His connection to the environment comes from a strong connection to Country through his family and has been with him since childhood. Family holidays were spent camping across Australia, from the rainforests of Far North Queensland to the Red Centre. That sense of connection has continued throughout his career, which has given him the opportunity to work in and experience many of the country’s natural environments.

Trent enjoys simply being in these places and taking in everything around him, from what he can see and hear to what he can smell and feel.

When talking about 2rog, Trent says the thing he raves about most is that people genuinely care. They care about each other, care about the environment and care about the work they are doing. While projects need to be commercially successful, they also need to be interesting, worthwhile and delivered for clients who share similar values.

That genuine commitment to both people and purpose is what stands out most to him about working at 2rog.

A commitment to integrity, loyalty and service is a value that guides Trent both professionally and personally. It comes back to a simple principle: “Look after your people and the places that sustain them.”

When asked what his epithet would be, Trent chose “The Practical Environmentalist.” If he could instantly become an expert in anything, it would be languages, giving him the ability to speak with anyone and everyone in their own language.
